I was raised in this country as a Catholic...and in the process
of my Christian upbringing, the concept of taking care of those who are unable
to care for themselves became deeply ingrained in me, in fact more so than any
other aspect of the catholic Dogma. I
consider it my responsibility as a human to do so, simply because God has provided me with
the ability and has rendered me fortunate enough to use it (twice
actually).
Happiness can only be achieved when we are truly in the present moment...not upset about what's happened, nor anxious about what is to come. I find it incredibly difficult to just be, when people around me are going without. I remember clearly the day this began...I was around 9 years old, it was lunchtime on a summer day. I had come inside from our backyard & my father was standing in the kitchen with a stranger & his son, about my age. My father said "please go upstairs and get this boy a pair of your shorts to swim in..."...It was 90 degrees outside & he was wearing a beat up pair of jeans. My father then made the boy & his father a sandwich, and the boy swam in our pool for about half an hour. When he'd finished, my father took them to the bus station. When he returned, I asked him who they were and he replied "I don't know, he came up to me at the gas station & said that his father had passed away, he was on welfare & all they were provided was bus tickets to get to the funeral. I didn't have any money to give, so I brought him here & wrote him a check".

I find the Republican ticket and it’s supporters attempts to divide us as a
country by insinuating that ANYONE is looking for an undue handout, to be a
direct attack on the concept of community & yes, you do live among your
neighbors. 99.9% of the people receiving
public assistance have to fight off & survive through the undue and very
real, painful feeling of shame that comes with each check...because though they
have tried, they have no other option to get by. They are brave, because what they receive is
so little & they continue on each day.
I cannot say I envy them, though I admire their courage and I will
always do what I can to help them.
Unfortunately, those who have the most "assets" in this
country, may perhaps contest that they share this belief, though they have no
concept of balance and the result of their greed is a polluted, sinking ship
called earth.
Our president is not taking from you to give to others, he is standing up against those who have taken ridiculous amounts, using devious methods...attempting to explain to them, and get them to abide by the concept that we are one, we are equal. It is time to band together…

"The story of that movement still represents for me who we are as a
country: a people dedicated to something greater than ourselves, and a nation
that recognizes our responsibility to each other." - Robert Redford
